Topic: Teaching Grammar in Language Teacher Education: Processing Instruction and Effect of Transfer of Training

In this talk, in the first part, I will tell you the story of four Indian blind men. You will then receive a brief introduction to processing instruction – an intervention, not a method; an intervention based upon VanPatten’s years-long input processing theory. In the second part, I will talk about a specific research study that I am still carrying out with the support of the TUBITAK 1001 grant. It is an experimental study that investigates any effect of input or output on the better way of teaching notoriously difficult linguistic forms in L2 Grammar. It is also an innovative study that uses an Eye Tracking Instrument, not pen and paper tests, to gather cognitive results. In line with the scope of the research, an array of ‘concrete’ pedagogical implications will be given for language teachers regarding optimal ways of teaching grammar, and suggestions will be made for further research.
